Proverbs 8: The Alluring Call of Wisdom

Proverbs 8 Scripture
1

Doth not wisdom cry? and understanding put forth her voice?

2

She standeth in the top of high places, by the way in the places of the paths.

3

She crieth at the gates, at the entry of the city, at the coming in at the doors.

4

Unto you, O men, I call; and my voice is to the sons of man.

5

O ye simple, understand wisdom: and, ye fools, be ye of an understanding heart.

6

Hear; for I will speak of excellent things; and the opening of my lips shall be right things.

7

For my mouth shall speak truth; and wickedness is an abomination to my lips.

8

All the words of my mouth are in righteousness; there is nothing froward or perverse in them.

9

They are all plain to him that understandeth, and right to them that find knowledge.

10

Receive my instruction, and not silver; and knowledge rather than choice gold.

11

For wisdom is better than rubies; and all the things that may be desired are not to be compared to it.

12

I wisdom dwell with prudence, and find out knowledge of witty inventions.

13

The fear of the Lord is to hate evil: pride, and arrogancy, and the evil way, and the froward mouth, do I hate.

14

Counsel is mine, and sound wisdom: I am understanding; I have strength.

15

By me kings reign, and princes decree justice.

16

By me princes rule, and nobles, even all the judges of the earth.

17

I love them that love me; and those that seek me early shall find me.

18

Riches and honour are with me; yea, durable riches and righteousness.

19

My fruit is better than gold, yea, than fine gold; and my revenue than choice silver.

20

I lead in the way of righteousness, in the midst of the paths of judgment:

21

That I may cause those that love me to inherit substance; and I will fill their treasures.

22

The Lord possessed me in the beginning of his way, before his works of old.

23

I was set up from everlasting, from the beginning, or ever the earth was.

24

When there were no depths, I was brought forth; when there were no fountains abounding with water.

25

Before the mountains were settled, before the hills was I brought forth:

26

While as yet he had not made the earth, nor the fields, nor the highest part of the dust of the world.

27

When he prepared the heavens, I was there: when he set a compass upon the face of the depth:

28

When he established the clouds above: when he strengthened the fountains of the deep:

29

When he gave to the sea his decree, that the waters should not pass his commandment: when he appointed the foundations of the earth:

30

Then I was by him, as one brought up with him: and I was daily his delight, rejoicing always before him;

31

Rejoicing in the habitable part of his earth; and my delights were with the sons of men.

32

Now therefore hearken unto me, O ye children: for blessed are they that keep my ways.

33

Hear instruction, and be wise, and refuse it not.

34

Blessed is the man that heareth me, watching daily at my gates, waiting at the posts of my doors.

35

For whoso findeth me findeth life, and shall obtain favour of the Lord.

36

But he that sinneth against me wrongeth his own soul: all they that hate me love death.

Proverbs 8 Commentary

In the book of Proverbs, Solomon masterfully unveils the virtues of wisdom, emphasizing our profound need to acquire it and live by its principles. He contrasts this with stark warnings against rejecting wisdom, illustrating the consequences through vivid imagery. Chapter 7 culminates with a cautionary tale of seduction, depicting a foolish young man ensnared by a promiscuous woman. In striking contrast, Proverbs 8 presents wisdom personified as a woman, extending a compelling invitation to all who would listen. This chapter, and the next, elevate wisdom, portraying her existence before creation and highlighting her life-giving power to those who embrace her.

Wisdom's Public Proclamation (Proverbs 8:1-5)

Echoing Proverbs 1:20-21, wisdom is again personified as a woman, not whispering in dark corners, but crying out in public places, eager to be heard. Lady Wisdom, unlike the seductress of chapter 7, doesn't hide her intentions. She stands boldly in the streets, offering her gift freely to all. Her message isn't obscured or hidden; rather, the foundational principles of godly wisdom are clear and accessible, inviting everyone to listen and understand. Wisdom's agenda is aligned with God's agenda, offering a spiritual perspective on life that is readily available to those who seek it. Parents, take note: instill wisdom in your children with clarity and consistency, drowning out the competing voices vying for their attention.

The Incomparable Value of Wisdom (Proverbs 8:6-11)

In stark contrast to those who are corrupt and deceitful, wisdom speaks with nobility, righteousness, and truth. Her instruction surpasses the finest gold, silver, and jewels in value. This holds true both practically and spiritually. From a practical standpoint, embracing wisdom offers a pathway to success, even from humble beginnings, far exceeding the fleeting gains of foolishness. More importantly, from an eternal perspective, wisdom holds immeasurable value, as our souls are worth infinitely more than any earthly possession (Mark 8:36).

Wisdom, the Foundation of Righteousness (Proverbs 8:12-21)

Wisdom teaches that the fear of the Lord is the hatred of evil, a reverential and worshipful obedience that we should rightly offer to God (Proverbs 1:7). Conversely, that which opposes wisdom is characterized by pride, arrogance, and corruption. For leaders, in particular, godly wisdom is essential for benevolence and justice. Wisdom loves those who love her, and those who diligently seek her will surely find her (Proverbs 8:17; Jeremiah 29:13; Matthew 7:7-8). Honoring God through wisdom yields blessings far exceeding fine gold and choice silver. We should not settle for a merely socially acceptable approach to life, for God has something far better planned for those who live according to His wisdom. Those who listen to Wisdom become shrewd and develop common sense (Proverbs 8:5), receiving good advice (Proverbs 8:14).

Wisdom's Eternal Existence and Role in Creation (Proverbs 8:22-31)

Solomon unveils a profound truth: wisdom existed before God created the earth and the heavens. The depiction of wisdom as something established by God before creation speaks to God's perfection. Wisdom poetically describes being alongside the Lord as a master workman, rejoicing in His creation. From the heavens above to the foundations of the earth below, God made His world through wisdom (Proverbs 8:27-29). Wisdom wasn’t a mere tool that God used; it was His delight every day (Proverbs 8:30).

The Invitation and the Consequences (Proverbs 8:32-36)

Returning to the theme of invitation, wisdom earnestly urges all to listen to her, promising blessings to those who respond positively. She promises life and favor from the Lord to those who listen. However, those who fail to find wisdom—those who ignore God's teaching—inflict harm upon themselves and embrace death. Ultimately, they face separation from God. As Solomon concludes this chapter, he appeals to his sons to see wisdom as the door that leads to happiness (Proverbs 8:32-34). Finding wisdom is the difference between life and death (Proverbs 8:35-36).

If not for wisdom, you wouldn’t be here. Wisdom is woven into creation; therefore, you can’t escape the consequences of rejecting it. Your Creator has given you an example to follow. God accomplished his glorious work with wisdom. So why attempt your own work without it? Wisdom brings joy. If you want to be truly happy in God’s kingdom, pursuing wisdom guarantees God will bless you with rejoicing.
